Gene Upshaw passes away at 63...

Gene Upshaw had problems due to pancreatic cancer. He was a Hall-of-Famer, from his days with the Oakland Raiders ('67-'81). He had been President of the NFLPA for about 25 years. He will be sorely missed.

Goodell speaks out on rookie deals...

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said it's "ridiculous" to reward untested rookies with lucrative contracts, and wants the issue addressed in contract talks. "There's something wrong about the system," Goodell said Friday. "The money should go to people who perform."

Goodell referred to Michigan tackle Jake Long's five-year, $57.75 million contract -- with $30 million guaranteed. Long was the first overall draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in April.

"He doesn't have to play a down in the NFL and he already has his money," Goodell said during a question-and-answer period at the end of a weeklong sports symposium at the Chautauqua Institution. "Now, with the economics where they are, the consequences if you don't evaluate that player, you can lose a significant amount of money. "And that money is not going to players that are performing. It's going to a player that never makes it in the NFL. And I think that's ridiculous."

Goodell said he favors lowering salaries offered to rookies, but allowing a provision for those players to renegotiate their deals after proving themselves on the field.

40 YEARS AGO, GIBSON WAS AMAZING

In 1968, Bob Gibson was the ace of the St. Louis Cardinals Pitching staff. He compiled a record of 22-9, with a 1.12 ERA! AND...he pitched TWENTY-EIGHT COMPLETE GAMES!!! That's right.....28!

The Cardinals went on to the World Series, where they lost to the Detroit Tigers. Denny McLain had 31 wins that year. In that year, pitchers came off a 15" mound, which obviously gave them an advantage. Is the game better now, with pitchers only using a 10" mound?

TEBOW READY TO LEAD GATORS...He won the Heisman last year, and now Tim Tebow will get things rolling for the Gators this season...

Tony Stewart will leave Gibbs in '09..

Tony Stewart will not be in the #20 Home Depot car next year. He will be with Haas Racing as a co-owner...it is very likely 18-year old Joey Pistone will be in the #20....

Tiger admits his rehab hasn't been easy...

Eldrick has started rehab on his knee after surgery, and it has been tough. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour, life without Mr. Woods has meant a) chances for others to win, and b) low ratings for TV coverage.

FYI...Tiger's official career earnings are now over $82 million...

Red Sox look for Ortiz' production...

With Manny gone, its now up to Kevin Youkilis (left) and David Ortiz to provide the power hitting for the Boston Red Sox. And so we'll see how the Sox do...

Change of thought...

Despite missing the cut at the PGA Tour event in Reno, Nevada, Michelle Wie has shown she is splaying decent golf as of late. Now 18 years old and in her 2d year at Stanford, she has banked about $30 million, with most of it coming mainly from endorsements. Those sponsors have been left hanging, due to her lack of success.

Is it fair to chastise Michelle Wie at such a young age? Were the expectations too high? Did she bring them upon her own self? Good questions to ponder, while we wait to see if she will have to go to Q-school just to PLAY Tour events next season...

TOTAL WASTE OF TALENT.

John Daly could've been as good as Tiger Woods, if he had kept the mental focus and desire that Eldrick holds every moment of his career. Instead, all we see is a total loser who has completely wasted away his abilities that so, so many others would kill to hold.

NFL 2008-9

All 32 teams are ready to go, with EVERYONE believing they are going to be better and improved vs. last year...

FAVRE, JETS WIN!

Brett Favre had a good day in a different uniform. He led the Jets to a 20-14 win over the Miami Dolphins to start his 'comeback'. New York will now host the Pats next weekend...

NY Giants handle the 'Skins...

The New York Giants came out and dominated the 1st half of their game with Washington, then the Defense (above) held tight for the 2d Half, and the Giants come away with a 16-7 victory to open the season...

COLLEGE FOOTBALL...

Play started this past weekend. Can LSU repeat? Or will the Ohio State Buckeyes FINALLY win it all, after being the bridesmaid the last two years?

GREG LARSON...

Greg Larson is well-known for his writing prowess...his years writing as a columnist are among the best ever. Here, he shares his thoughts...

The University of Georgia is spending two million dollars, some of it donated, on a statue garden for its storied former football coach Vince Dooley.
Dooley won 200 games and a national title in his tenure as Georgia head coach. Dooley's statue is 14-feet high and very impressive.
After Dooley stepped down as football coach he remained as athletic director at Georgia. He endured some skirmishes with new administrators and was finally nudged out all together.
Dooley's $2 million statue garden will be located at the Georgia football practice grounds some 1500 meters from Sanford Stadium. Nice statue but who is going to see it?
If you're going to spend that kind of money for a statue garden for a guy who won 200 games and a national crown it belongs, not a mile down the road, but at the stadium where 95,000 fans can see it each week.
